Inked in Japan – Our Mission
Japan is a country with a rich cultural heritage, and hot springs (onsen) are one of its most treasured traditions. For centuries, onsen have been places not only for relaxation but also for community, health, and spiritual refreshment.
However, many international visitors with tattoos face difficulties when entering onsen. This comes from Japan’s unique history: tattoos (irezumi) were historically associated with punishment or with the yakuza, organized crime groups. Because of this cultural background, tattoos have long been misunderstood in public bathing culture.
Today, attitudes are slowly changing. Younger generations and international influences are bringing more openness. Still, some facilities remain strict, while others have started to welcome tattooed guests under certain conditions.
Our mission with Inked in Japan is to provide clear information and safe options so that every traveler, regardless of having tattoos, can experience the beauty and peace of Japanese hot springs. By understanding the history and respecting the culture, we hope to build bridges between Japan and the world, making onsen accessible to all.
